Hungary Work Visa Regulation Change - January 2008
Effective January 1, 2008, European Economic Area (EEA) citizens and and nationals from Norway, Lichtenstein, Switzerland and Iceland who are in possession of the requisite qualification(s) for a specific job, no longer need a work permit to take up employment in Hungary.
Prospective employers are required to declare their employment to the Hungarian Labor Office.
EEA citizens
- Require a Registration Card - a document that replaced their "Residence Permit" in July 2007. The Registration Card is issued for an indefinite period and will not need to be renewed - although it must be returned to the issuing authority upon repatriation.
- A passport or other official form of photo-identification must be carried with the Registration Card at all times.
- A Driver's License is not regarded as official identification in Hungary.
- EEA citizens will receive:
- Official Address Card - needed to purchase a car
- Social Security Card - required if social welfare contributions are being paid in Hungary
- Tax Card
Non-EEA citizens:
- Visa Required to Enter Hungary - if you wish to come to Hungary to work, apply for a Residence Permit at the Hungarian Consulate in your country. Approval will be based on meeting requirements for a Work Permit. Upon approval you will be allowed into Hungary for a period of 30 days. At the end of this period, pick up a Residence Permit from the authorities in Budapest. The permit may be valid for a maximum of up to two years.
- 90 Day Tourist Visa - For foreign nationals not obliged to obtain a visa to enter Hungary, first apply for a tourist visa for up to 90 days and then apply for a Work Permit and Residence Permit. Please note: experts advise obtaining the Residence Permit before entering Hungary.
