French Customs Procedures
When moving to France a number of documents are required
When Importing household goods to France:
- Certificate of change of residence obtainable from the French Consulate at origin or
a letter from a French Employer stating that shipper has been living in the origin country for more than one year.
- A detailed valued inventory in French, signed by shipper
- A non resale attestation form (copy herewith attached)
- Copy of passport
- Proof of residence in France (electricity, phone bill or rental contract)
REQUIRED
When Importing a vehicle into France:
- Original certificate of title
- Original registration card
- Declaration of change of residence from the French Consulate at origin
- Purchase invoice
Duty free Vehicle admission:
- Owner must have lived abroad for more than one year
- Vehicle must have been owned for more than 6 months
- Vehicle is normally registered
- Vehicle is for a personal use only (not for a commercial use)
- NOTE: If a vehicle is imported, it must be mentioned on the inventory, even if it is not accompanying the household goods.
Miscellaneous French Import Topics
- Inheritance: Declaration from a Public Notary with inventory of goods, date of death, degree of kinship and French residence permit. The goods must be shipped within one year from date of death
- Students: Official attestation of attendance at school or university. The scholar's goods must be shipped within two months from date of registration at school or university
- Wedding presents: Marriage certificate and French residence permit. The goods must be shipped within one month from date of marriage.
- Secondary residence: Preliminary official authorization from French Regional Head customs Office
- Prohibited: Narcotics, Drugs, Explosive, Arms, Pornography, Live Plants, Ivory Alcoholic Beverages And Tobacco. Tobacco products are allowed, but are subject to duty or tax. A reasonable quantity of wines and hard liquors may be brought in duty free it it can be considered 'restants de cave' (remainder of wine-cellar).
