About the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom, also known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the UK or simply Britain, is a sovereign state comprised of the island of Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) and Northern Ireland.

The capital city of the UK is London - located in England - which also happens to be the second largest urban center within the European Union. While the United Kingdom is a unitary state under a constitutional monarchy, Scotland, England and Wales are also ruled by devolved administrations in their respective capitals of Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. Scotland officially joined with England in the 1707 Acts of Union, with Ireland combining with Great Britain in 1801.

The United Kingdom boasts the world's sixth-largest economy by nominal GDP and was the first industrialized country on earth. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was also the world's top superpower.

From bustling city centers to country sides, cliffs, castles and lands steeped in rich history, the United Kingdom has it all.
